Wang Yi Meets with High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell Fontelles
2020/02/16

On February 15, 2020 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell Fontelles on the sidelines of the 56th Munich Security Conference.

Josep Borrell Fontelles said, the EU side appreciates the Chinese side’s efforts in fighting the novel coronavirus pneumonia epidemic and has full confidence in China in overcoming the epidemic soon. The EU side has provided some assistance and is willing to provide more anti-virus medical supplies according to the Chinese side’s needs. The EU side stands for an objective assessment of the situation and avoiding panic. The EU side believes that it is inappropriate that some countries have overreacted by closing borders and suspending flights.

Josep Borrell Fontelles said, the recent criticisms and accusations against China from individual countries are out of jealousy for China’s development success, since China is the only country in human history that is able to achieve great accomplishments within such a short period of time. China is not a belligerent country and it is fully justified to have a military force that is able to ensure its own security. The EU side welcomes China’s greater role on the international stage and will try to find ways to live peacefully together with China and the United States. 2020 is an important year for EU-China relations and we are willing to work together with the Chinese side towards success in this year’s political agenda, including the EU-China Summit. The EU side is willing to work with the Chinese side to deepen cooperation in economy and trade, jointly address global issues such as climate change, and build closer EU-China relations.

Wang Yi said, I appreciate your positive and open attitude towards China's development. China also has the right to development. The Chinese people have made remarkable achievements through diligence and sweat. The modernization of the 1.4 billion Chinese people is a major contribution to human progress. The Chinese side is committed to taking a path that is different from the old one in history that a strong country is bound to seek hegemony, adhering to its own peaceful development, and insisting on win-win cooperation with the world.

Wang Yi said, the Chines side always supports the growth and prosperity of the EU, regardless of whether the EU is in good times or adversity, and China hopes to see the EU play a greater role on the international stage. Both China and the EU support free trade, multilateralism, a multi-polar world and democracy in state-to-state relations. There is no fundamental disagreement between China and the EU, and the two sides are partners, not rivals. Faced with many risks and challenges in the world, China and the EU should further strengthen strategic coordination. In 2020, China and the EU has a series of important political agendas, and the Chinese side is willing to closely communicate with the EU side to promote the further development of China-EU relations. The Chinese side appreciates the EU side’s understanding and support for China’s fight against the novel coronavirus pneumonia epidemic. The epidemic respects no borders and the Chinese side has made efforts to prevent the spread of the epidemic to the world. We are willing to strengthen cooperation with the EU side to well address the common challenges facing human society.
