China and New Zealand hold the 8th Military Strategic Dialogue

On August 25, the 8th round of Strategic Dialogue between the Chinese and New Zealand militaries was held in Wellington. Major General Shao Yuanming, Deputy Chief of the Joint Staff Department of China's Central Military Commission (CMC) attended and jointly chaired the meeting with Air Vice-Marshal (AVM) Kevin Short, Deputy Chief of the New Zealand Defense Force (NZDF) and Tony Lynch, Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Defense of New Zealand.

Maj. Gen. Shao Yuanming noted that during the successful visit of President Xi Jinping to New Zealand in 2014, the two countries announced the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership, drawing up a blueprint and pointing out the direction for the development of relations between the two countries and the two militaries. Under the guidance and support of the leaders of the two countries, pragmatic cooperation between the two militaries has been further advanced with close high-level exchanges and smooth strategic communications. On the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and New Zealand, China is willing to take this opportunity to work with New Zealand in further expanding exchanges and cooperation to build an ‘upgrade version’ of defense cooperation between the two countries to play a greater role in safeguarding regional peace and stability.

The New Zealand side noted that defense relation between New Zealand and China is an important component of bilateral relations. The two militaries have achieved fruitful cooperative results in the fields of high-level visits, joint military exercises and drills, humanitarian rescue and disaster relief. New Zealand is willing to work with China to implement the consensuses reached by the leaders of the two countries and constantly expand and enrich the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and New Zealand.

On the same day, Maj. Gen. Shao Yuanming also met with Lieutenant General Timothy (Tim) Keating, Chief of the New Zealand Defense Force, and Helene Quilter, Secretary of Defense of New Zealand. The two sides exchanged in-depth view on issues of common concern.

China’s Ambassador to New Zealand, Wang Lutong, also attended the meetings.
